A little over a month ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Vice Presidential candidates J.D. Vance and Tim Walz will have their own debate, and the rules will differ from the one that took place between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris on September 10.

When is the vice-presidential debate between Tim Walz and J.D. Vance?

The vice-presidential debate will take place Tuesday, October 1 at 9 p.m. ET.

Who is moderating the vice-presidential debate between J.D. Vance and Tim Walz?

CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate.

Where can I watch the vice-presidential debate? Is it streaming?

CBS News will host the broadcast of the debate. CBS News’ special coverage of the event will begin at 4 p.m. ET, with primetime coverage starting at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+. In addition to airing on the CBS Television Network and CBS News 24/7, the debate will stream on Paramount+.

ABC

ABC News’ coverage of the debate will begin at 7 p.m. and last until 12 p.m. ET. Coverage will be available on ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu. ABC News will also simulcast the CBS News debate.

BBC

The BBC will air the simulcast of the CBS debate on the BBC News Channel and via livestream on BBC.com as well as on FAST/CTV in the U.S.

C-SPAN

C-SPAN will simulcast the Tuesday, October 1, 2024, CBS News Vice Presidential Debate between Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz LIVE on C-SPAN, C-SPAN Radio, C-SPAN.org and on the C-SPAN NOW app. Coverage on C-SPAN Networks will begin at 8p.m. ET.

Fox

Fox’s programming will be available across Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, Fox News Digital, Fox News Audio and Fox Nation. Coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET, and there will be coverage after the debate staring at 11 p.m. ET. Fox Business Network will simulcast the debate.

MSNBC

MSNBC’s coverage will begin at 7 p.m. ET, and MSNBC will air the debate hosted by CBS. Coverage following the debate will start at midnight ET and end at 2 a.m. ET.

NBC News

NBC News will air the debate live on NBC and NBC News Now. Pre-debate primetime coverage starts at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and NBC News Now. Special coverage will follow until 11 p.m. ET.

NewsNation

NewsNation will present special live coverage of the vice-presidential debate from 7 p.m.-midnight ET. The CBS debate will be simulcast from 9-10:30 p.m. ET.

Spectrum News

Spectrum News will simulcast the CBS debate, with coverage beginning at 8:45 p.m. ET. Coverage will air on Spectrum News’ networks and on Spectrum News+, available on the Spectrum News App on mobile, Xumo Stream Box, and Apple and Roku devices.

What are the rules for the vice-presidential debate bewteen Tim Walz and J.D. Vance?

Like with the presidential debate in September, there will be no audience for the vice-presidential debate. The debate will consist of 90 minutes to speak, with two four-minute breaks for each contestant. The only ones asking questions will be moderators O’Donnell and Brennan, who will be seated. Candidates will stand behind podiums with Gov. Walz on stage left/screen right and Sen. Vance on stage right/screen left.

Closing statements will take place within a two-minute time frame, and as of a coin toss September 26, Vance selected to go second with his closing statement. No props or pre-written notes will be allowed on stage, and no topics or questions will presented to candidates in advance. Each candidate will receive a pen, pad of paper and bottle of water, and campaign staff are not allowed to interact with either Walz or Vance during breaks. Candidates’ mics will not be muted, but CBS reserves the right to turn them off if needed.

For each question the candidate gets asked, two minutes will be granted to answer, and the other candidate will get two minutes to respond. Then, each candidate gets one minute for further rebuttals. Candidates may get an additional minute each to continue a discussion at the discretion of the moderators.
