The first wave of reactions for Mortal Kombat II is here, and it sounds like the creative team listened to the criticism’s of the first film and fixed it for the sequel.

After early screenings for select critics, the word coming out is that this follow-up leans harder into what made the games iconic while ditching the stuff that didn’t land the first time.

One of the biggest talking points is the removal of a divisive concept from the previous movie. As one viewer put it, “Mortal Kombat II ignores the Arcana stuff entirely. Basically the Midichlorians of Mortal Kombat 2021. They took all fan complaints very seriously.”

That course correction seems to ripple through the entire movie. Another reaction summed it up like this: “Mortal Kombat 2 is the movie we should’ve gotten the first time.

“It feels more confident and comfortable embracing its video game roots to huge benefit. It’s a fun, fast-paced, ridiculous bloodbath with great action. Kitana is the heart of it. Kano is hilarious.”

That tone shift appears to be exactly what fans were hoping for, with more personality, more chaos, and a lot more of the franchise’s signature style.

The action is also getting some love, especially from fans who know their martial arts. One reaction highlighted the attention to detail:

“I was looking at Kung Lao’s moves and he def uses Wing Chun which I LOVE. Johnny Cage gave me a lil Jack Burton Big Trouble in Little China vibes.”

That mix of technical choreography and over-the-top character energy seems to be a winning combo.

Speaking of Johnny Cage, Karl Urban is already getting attention for his take on the fan-favorite fighter, bringing a mix of swagger and humor. He’s joined by Josh Lawson, who returns as Kano and is once again being called out as a scene-stealer.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat without going hard on the violence, and the sequel apparently doesn’t hold back. One reaction described it as “non-stop KRAZY KOMBAT action” with “Fatalities next-level savage.”

That’s exactly the kind of violent and savage energy fans expect when stepping into this world.

Another early viewer added, “high-octane & packed with a ton of great references,” while noting that even if they enjoyed the first film, “this one is a level above.” That’s a strong endorsement considering how split reactions were to the reboot.

Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm Mortal Kombat II, working from a script by Jeremy Slater, known for his work on Moon Knight and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This time around, the story pushes things further as Earthrealm’s fighters gear up for a full-scale war.

The stakes are higher, the roster is bigger, and the threat of Shao Kahn looms large. With Johnny Cage now in the mix, there’s an added layer of attitude and humor as the fighters head into a brutal clash that could decide the fate of everything.

It sounds like the sequel isn’t afraid to embrace the franchise’s wild side, mixing savage fight sequences with some comedic edge. If these early reactions are any indication, Mortal Kombat II might be exactly what fans were hoping for after the first film.

Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on May 8, 2026, from Warner Bros. Pictures
