Green Day have announced the theatrical release date for their upcoming film, Nimrods, out August 14. “Get ready, it’s time to hitch a ride down the boulevard of broken dreams,” Green Day tease on Instagram.
The coming-of-age movie, which was initially titled New Years Rev, is directed by Lee Kirk and is loosely based on Green Day’s early days. The movie will follow three teens as they head to Los Angeles after thinking their band was booked to open up for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.

“I’ve always wanted to do a Green Day film,” Armstrong said to the Hollywood Reporter at the movie’s premiere last year. “God, ever since the beginning, just all my heroes have always done films, whether it was Rock ‘n’ Roll High School by the Ramones or [the Beatles’] A Hard Day’s Night, the Who’s Quadrophenia. I just wanted to do the same thing.”
The movie, which stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, and Mckenna Grace, is influenced by the band’s real experiences in the early 1990s before gaining mainstream success with their 1994 album Dookie. Green Day are attached to the film as producers and will also appear in the movie.
