Fans hoping to jump back into Ahsoka are going to have to hang tight a little longer. During Disney’s upfront presentation on Tuesday, Rosario Dawson confirmed that Season 2 of the Star Wars series won’t premiere on Disney+ until early 2027.
The first season wrapped up in late 2023, and with filming on Season 2 reportedly finishing late last year, a lot of fans assumed Lucasfilm was aiming for a 2026 release. Apparently, the timeline had other plans.
The good news is that the next chapter sounds like it’s going much bigger in scale. According to series creator and Lucasfilm boss Dave Filoni, one legendary Star Wars character is finally entering the fight.
“He’s going head-to-head with [Grand Admiral] Thrawn,” Filoni said while confirming the return of Admiral Ackbar.
Honestly, seeing Ackbar square off against Thrawn feels like something longtime Star Wars fans have wanted forever. Thrawn has already proven himself as one of the franchise’s smartest and most dangerous villains, and putting him against the Rebellion’s famous tactical mastermind could lead to some seriously awesome space warfare.
Dawson also teased what fans can expect from the new season, saying: “This season, the battles are bigger, and the stakes are higher.”
Season 1 ended with Lars Mikkelsen’s Thrawn finally escaping Peridea and returning to the main Star Wars galaxy alongside Ezra Bridger, played by Eman Esfandi. Ezra reunited with Hera Syndulla, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, warning the New Republic that Thrawn was back and ready to rebuild the Imperial Remnant.
At the same time, Ahsoka and Sabine Wren, played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo, remained stranded on Peridea. They’re also dealing with the looming threat of Baylan Skoll, now played by Rory McCann following the passing of Ray Stevenson, and Shin Hati, played by Ivanna Sakhno.
Baylan’s mysterious connection to the Force became one of the biggest unresolved storylines from Season 1, and it seems clear that mystery is going to play a major role moving forward. Ahsoka and Sabine still need to figure out what he discovered on Peridea, and, of course, they probably wouldn’t mind finding a way home.
The setup is actually pretty great because the story is now split between two major conflicts. You’ve got Thrawn rebuilding power in the known galaxy while Ahsoka’s side of the story dives deeper into the strange Force mythology introduced on Peridea.
There’s a lot of room for giant battles, Jedi conflicts, political chaos, and weird ancient Force lore all colliding together. Now it’s just a matter of waiting until 2027 to see it happen.
In the meantime, 2026 will still give Star Wars fans something to look forward to with The Mandalorian & Grogu hitting theaters. Then 2027 is shaping up to be a packed year for the franchise with Ahsoka Season 2 arriving first, followed by the theatrical re-release of the original Star Wars and then Star Wars: Starfighter.
