Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse recently released to critical and commercial acclaim. However, according to one of the film’s stars Hailee Steinfeld, work was being done on the film as close as a week before release.
Hailee Steinfeld recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about the experience of working as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. When asked about if she had done any work on the film’s sequel Beyond the Spider-Verse, Steinfeld revealed she had been working on Across the Spider-Verse a week before release, saying it was “down to the wire” to get done:
“We have been working on this one up until, like, a week ago. What’s crazy is, before this, I think the the only thing I could maybe even remotely compare it to are ADR sessions, right?” Steinfeld tells Happy Sad Confused before continuing later. “It’s mind-blowing that… I thought that I saw the final thing, that’s for sure it was not done. There are so many things I’m sure that I will now see for the first time when it is out, and done, and complete. But yeah, luckily, I don’t feel… there’s a little bit of it, but I do not feel anywhere near the amount of stress that I know these guys feel just down to the wire making it what they need to make it.
This update from Hailee Steinfeld may leave many fans worried that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse may end up being delayed given Across the Spider-Verse was in development for five years. However, it’s important to note that the script and many of the assets for Beyond the Spider-Verse have already been completed due to the nature of the film being a direct continuation. While it’s possible for Sony to delay the film, it likely won’t be for as long as many fans may fear.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Dave Callaham, Across The Spider-Verse also features the voice talents of Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jason Schwartzman, Rachel Dratch, Shea Whigham and Jorma Taccone. Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Christina Steinberg are producing the upcoming movie alongside Lord and Miller, who also worked on its predecessor.
The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse synopsis reads as follows: “Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga… After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”
