U.S. Agent actor Wyatt Russell is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thunderbolts. During a recent interview, the actor teased the amount of depth being brought to the project by director Jake Schreier.
Fans have been worried about Thunderbolts ever since it was announced, with many assuming it will be another paint-by-numbers Marvel flick. However, it seems first impressions may be deceiving. Wyatt Russell, who plays U.S. Agent in the MCU, teased the surprising amount of depth in the project thanks to director Jake Schreier.
“There’s so much to play with John, and there’s so much more to do with John,” Russell told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m so lucky to get to work with the kind of talent that I’m going to work with when Thunderbolts starts up in March or April. It just feels like we’re going for something that has depth and something interesting to theorize about beyond just flying around and doing superhero stuff.”
“That’s awesome and cool, and it’ll be in there, too, obviously, but I’m hoping to do what we’ve done with [Monarch: Legacy of Monsters],” He continued. “There’s a human element to this and those characters. They’re hard stories to write and do, but if you work hard enough and you really put your heart and soul into it, you can always make them great.”
“So I’m really looking forward to working hard and having a blast. They’re so fun when you let them be fun, and I could not be more excited.”
Jake Schreier is a sleeper pick for one of the most underrated directors in Hollywood. His first feature film, Robot & Frank, garnered critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival and his most recent project, Beef, received 13 Emmy nominations, among other awards. It’s safe to say that Wyatt Russell may be on the money when he talks about the depth the director will bring to Thunderbolts.
Who is attached to the Thunderbolts movie?
During Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation in July, it was revealed that Jake Schreier would direct the upcoming Thunderbolts project. Eric Pearson, the writer for Black Widow, had previously written a draft of the script before being replaced by Lee Sung Jin.
Thunderbolts features a star-studded cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfuss as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Hannah John-Kamen as the Ghost, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes and Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross. Ayo Edebir and Steven Yeun are also on board in undisclosed roles.
